      We can test the robustness of the wireless connection if you want, but I suspect that it's probably just fine. For example, all the times I've used my VPN at home, it has never dropped. (It drops all the time, however, when I'm using Verizon wireless.)

        Yeah, you're right: both Windows XP and Office 2003 will no longer be supported. However, given that the security updates to Office are few and far between, it may be worth risking running the old version for a while longer. Your call.

        What I'm suggesting is that she run Windows 7 but continue to use Office 2003. I think that's the cheap, yet safe-enough, option. A better solution would be to use LibreOffice, but that may be too great a leap forward.
