I just received the following email from one of my neighbors regarding an urgent situation for some rescued rabbits in the Santa Cruz / Watsonville area shelter system. It seems there has been a large influx of rescued rabbits from a hoarding situation, followed by a large influx of cats and dogs from a hoarding situation. There is not enough space for all of them, so some rabbits -- rescued and in the shelter -- will be euthanized by 11/11, Sunday, to make room for incoming cats and dogs. The email below is passing on an urgent call for foster homes for the rabbits. If you can help, the contact person is Heather Bechtel, director of the Rabbit Haven. Her contact information, from the forwarded email below, is 831 600-7479, http://www.therabbithaven.org/~Director. Thank you, Marilyn ------ Forwarded email re: urgent situation for rabbits: Can you help? Please contact Heather Bechtel (her number is at the bottom) Have you a temporary small space in your home and your heart to foster a bunny or two temporarily??? we supply ALL items needed. Subject: Urgent Rescue request- 20-28 or Rabbits to be euthanized by 11-11 Sunday, If we cannot get them out to rescue-foster or adoption. HELP!!! Dear Rabbit Haven Friends, 20-28 rabbits need your help ASAP please. Santa Cruz and Watsonville shelter rabbits are now at risk of euthanasia by 11-11 This Sunday. http://therabbithaven.org/LaSelvaRescue_110812.html <http://therabbithaven.org/LaSelvaRescue_110812.html> . I just received an intense phone call and a formal letter from representatives of the Santa Cruz that alerted us that a huge hoarding rescue is taking place today, right on the heels of the rabbit rescue on 11-6 when we took in 20. The shelter states that by the end of the day today, Thursday, 11-8, approximately 60 dogs and cats will be incoming to the Santa Cruz shelter system. These animals will displace the 20 rabbits that just arrived 11-6 to the Santa Cruz shelter and rabbits that are at the Watsonville shelter (8) as well. Total of 28 rabbits. The shelter has notified us that they will need to begin euthanizing rabbits in 3-4 days. The shelter adds "Rescue should be for any rabbits we have. ... We will be assessing our entire population for kennel stress, adoptability, behavior, etc. and making euthanasia decisions based on those criteria, so it wouldn't just be the new rabbits that were at risk." The shelter is very small there is no way they can absorb this large number of dogs cats and rabbits (all at the same time). This puts all of the newly rescued shelter rabbits and some of our long term adoptable rabbits at the shelter in immediate danger. Their are many beautiful rabbits. Lops, Rex, honey and black colors. We also have Dutch, and Havana, gray, spotted and white bunnies. Small , medium and large- Plus Watsonville has five large, beautiful, healthy lops too. All at risk. With your help right away we can save some of these rabbits, if not all- I have pulled out two so far. I have two more females that are spayed and a front room filled with adoptable, spayed/neutered rabbits. Your verbal commitment is what we need right away. Lives may be spared if we know the rabbit has a place to go. Sadly, given the three back to back rescues in both Santa Cruz and San , The Rabbit Haven is in temp. closed status right now as we are out of space. This is the worse case scenario to be sure. We have very little flexibility. At this point we can only add fosters, accept adopters, and facilitate rescue. Will you please call me right away to discuss the situation and let me know if you are able to take in any one of the rabbits? The shelter will literally have no place to put the incoming animals unless the rabbits can be rescued. Please call me if you can rescue today or tomorrow even one rabbit will help. We have four spayed already- If you take a female or male I will send along a spay certificate with them good at either Palo Alto or Four paws in Fremont - Please help use save as many rabbits as possible right away. I look forward to hearing from you. Even if it is no, maybe you have an idea or a foster who can help. Post your volunteers if you will please. Please act today so we can help these rabbits. Leslie Andrews, the shelter advocate at Santa Cruz County will also be in contact with local area rescues this evening - She will help coordinate transport to you.831 588-6676 I look forward to hearing from you.
