OK, I created an Ubuntu CD which may work. I'll try to find time to send it tomorrow. What I did was go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download , selected "server" and also selected "Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD" below the "Start Download" button, downloaded the ISO image, extracted its contents into a directory, added "jove" (it already had gcc), created another ISO, and burned it onto a CD. I tested it and it seems to boot.
