This is a message from my cousin John Appel -Richard +Margaret

Things are moving forward slowly. We are down to 9 missing from my
company, 3 of whom I was close to. Someone told me that the President
made reference to a paraplegic and his friend who stayed with him. They
were Ed and Abe.

I never found out how Ed was crippled. Despite only being able to move
his head, he worked as a programmer using a stick to press the keys. He
had a wheelchair that he operated by moving a pad with his chin. He
mentored my daughter Amy last summer when she interned with us, she
grieves for him. Ed never seemed to be the least bit angry about his
situation. I was always in awe at how he was never cross or down,
always smiling and friendly.

Abe was a quiet man, Orthodox Jew, still wore a jacket and tie when we
went dress down. He carried a quiet strength. I was not surprised to
hear that he stayed with Ed. But he was a small man and Ed was large.
He could not have carried Ed.

Angela was a young woman, maybe early or mid 30s. She married a couple
of years ago and I finally had gotten use to looking up her number by her
new name. She worked in the testing area and helped me stress test my
web application before we went live at the beginning of the summer.
Someone said they saw her getting into an elevator just before the plane
hit. A fireball blasted through all the shafts.

Someone took a picture of all of us moving down the stairs and the
firemen walking up carrying their heavy equipment. It was so hot and
smoky in there. We were having a hard time walking down. They could
only make a couple of landings before they would have to stop. The pain
on their faces from the effort is an overwhelming memory for me. They
are all gone.

My thoughts and love go out to all of you.
