Subject: Step-by-step instructions for saving speech files while
uninstalling and reinstalling DragonDictate
Product: DragonDictate for Windows
Version: 2.5, 2.51, 2.52, 3.0, 3.01, 3.02
Description:
The following are step-by-step instructions for saving your speech
files, uninstalling DragonDictate, reinstalling DragonDictate, and
then restoring your original speech files.
1. Exit out of DragonDictate if it is currently open.
2. Go from the Start button on your taskbar to Programs/Windows
Explorer.
3. When Windows Explorer opens up, your screen will be divided
into a left window and a right window. In the left window, you'll
see a little icon for your Desktop. Underneath that will be My
Computer, your 3 1/2 Floppy [A:], and your [C:] drive.
4. Single-click on the [C:] drive so that it is highlighted. Then
go to the File menu at the top of the screen and choose
New/Folder.
5. This will create a folder (temporarily named "New Folder") on
the [C:] drive. You'll be able to see this new folder in the right
window. Type in the words "Backup Speech Files" to name this
folder. (You can actually call it anything you want, but it's good
to use something obvious like Backup Speech Files to remind you
what it is.)
6. Single-click one more time on the [C:] drive in the left
window. You will see that your new folder, Backup Speech Files, is
now listed among the folders underneath the [C:] drive.
7. In this same list of folders, find the one labeled "Ddwin".
Like many of the yellow folders, it will have a little plus sign
to the left of the folder. Single-click on this plus sign.
8. You will now see the folder containing your speech files
directly underneath the Ddwin folder. Drag this file into the
Backup Speech Files folder. If multiple people have speech files
on this computer, you should drag all their folders into the
Backup Speech Files folder.
9. Only after you've moved your speech files out of the Ddwin
folder, you can delete this folder. To do this, single-click on
the Ddwin folder so that it is highlighted. Then go to the File
menu at the top of the screen and choose Delete. Close the Windows
Explorer. It is not necessary to Save before closing Windows
Explorer.
10. Close out of any applications that you may be running.
11. Place the DragonDictate CD in the CD-ROM drive. After a
moment, an auto-installer window will appear asking you to run the
install program. Follow the directions on the screen to do this.
12. When you reach the Setup Options window, it will ask you to
select a setup type. Choose Quick Install.
13. Depending on which version of DragonDictate you have, you may
be asked to enter your 16-digit registration number. This is not
the same as your serial number. The registration number can be
found on an index card that was packaged in your DragonDictate
box.
14. If you have version 3.0 or later: At the Office Application
Support screen, you will be asked to check either "Install Office
97 support" or "Install support for earlier Office versions." If
you are using Microsoft Office '97, be sure you check the former
box. Otherwise you will experience some problems when dictating
into any of your Office '97 programs.
15. When the install is complete, you will be asked to restart
your computer. Once you have done so, DragonDictate is fully
installed.
16. Now that you have successfully installed DragonDictate 3.0,
you need to put your original speech files in your new
DragonDictate folder. To do this, first go back into Windows
Explorer. (Start/Programs/Windows Explorer)
17. Once in Windows Explorer, look in the left window and find the
folder "Ddwin". Single-click on the plus sign next to it.
18. Now find the folder called "Backup Speech Files", or whatever
you chose to call that folder we made earlier. Single-click on the
plus sign next to this folder also. You should now be able to see
the folder with your name on it inside the Backup Speech Files, as
well as folders for any other people who've used DragonDictate on
this computer.
19. Drag the folder with your name on it from the Backup Speech
Files folder and into the Ddwin folder. Do the same for any other
people's folders that are in Backup Speech Files. Once you have
done this, close out of Windows Explorer. (There is no need to
Save before you close Windows Explorer.)
20. You are now ready to start DragonDictate. To do this, go to
the Start button, then to Programs/DragonDictate for
Windows/DragonDictate Classic Edition. DragonDictate will
automatically find your original speech files; it will give you a
message telling you that it has done so. You are now ready to use
DragonDictate!
