I wonder if booting into a Live Linux distribution on a USB in order
to read the DVD drive would've worked? I run Linux on this old
Macbook, but have no idea whether it works on modern ones. (FWIW,
xorriso on Linux works great for DVDs, much better than the DVD
software that came with Linux in previous years.)

This sort of stuff has become so annoying that, for when signing
documents, I have a digital "rubber stamp" signature for Noelle's
signature that she can just pop into Libreoffice Draw and paste the
signature to avoid the print-sign-scan-repeat cycle.

I agree that this stuff has got out of hand.
Noelle still depends upon me on how to get things to fax right, etc.
(I too use Sonic for my faxing, BTW. Some people came to the door to
try to convince me to switch to AT&T; that's when I remembered that
I've had Sonic since 2003 when we moved back to the Bay Area. Never
looked back.)
