This reminds me of the This is Hell episode,
https://thisishell.com/episodes/1590 .  People are so adverse to any sort
of instability or change in the status quo ante, that they'd do anything
to stop it.  I guess, at their core, most Americans are simply
conservative, even if they consider themselves liberal or even radical.
