I didn't read it all yet, but author has the usual East coast bias. 
and those are 
not pine groves, I think he should correct it to redwood groves, though they 
do have Monterey pines on the Esalen property.And I doubt there are 
fireflies in Ca.The New Yorker's fact checker did not do a 
good job.
as far as the important stuff, I'll get back to you after I take 
time to read it for real.
