Today's Freakonomics was

It got me thinking about HOV lanes.  I stumbled upon this paper:

Interesting argument.  It suggests that HOV lanes cause people to buy
houses further away; thus, although commute time goes down, energy usage
goes up.  The author suggests imposing toll roads as an alternative.

Seems like a good idea.
