I think it was due to my disabling plugins by default in Firefox (due to
the Java issue).
It looks like
http://superuser.com/questions/494834/firefox-click-to-play-exceptions has
the answer. It has pictures and stuff on how to do it.
Basically, you need to go to about:permissions , search for the Yahoo mail
web site, click on the blue button thingy, do "Activate plugs" and select
"Always activate plugins for this site".
