My ear doctors (including No's dad) use the little scoop thing to pull the
wax out -- it's safer than spraying water into the ear.
I've never found a good home remedy for cleaning ears -- I usually just
let 'em fill with wax. Sometimes they clean themselves out, sometimes
not.
