I was trying 64-bit Windows 7 under 32-bit Karmic Koala.  (For some
reason, I thought I had installed 64-bit Karmic, but I didn't.  And,
though my plan was to install 32-bit Windows 7, it turned out that
Macrosoft had a bad image for their 32-bit version so it would never have
worked!  So I had to install 64-bit.  Ugh.)

Nice.  I only recently got that working using an SSH tunnel from my laptop
at work (using autossh under cygwin).  Have you tried remmina on Ubuntu?
It's a nice wrapper around rdesktop ('tho rdesktop is pretty limited in
its functionality -- nothing like what most VNC clients give you).
