the fifty counties of Northern and Central Ca.
The Medi-Cal cuts, in addition to the 2008-09 budget delay, could cause a
health care emergency as ERs go on bypass and there is no where for
patients to go. Medi-Cal reductions -- estimated to impact Northern Ca hospitals by nearly $387 million in
annual losses, will decrease access to primary care services, and increase
the number of uninsured. Patients without a medical home and
uninsured patients will be forced to use our already overcrowded and
overburdened emergency rooms for basic care, increasing wait times for
everyone, insured or not. Increased usage will in turn put more
emergency rooms at risk of joining the growing list of closures statewide
(over 70 hospitals and emergency rooms have closed in Ca over the
past decade).
