Dear Robert,

Join California Common Cause for a discussion on the current redistricting
process and what options exist to create a fair and balanced process for
drawing district lines.

This summer the Legislature failed to act on a proposal that would have
reformed the way district lines are drawn in California. In 2001, the
California Legislature redrew legislative and congressional districts, leaving
communities throughout California divided. Senate Constitutional Amendment 3 (
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=sca_3&sess=CUR&house=B
) would have removed conflict of interest concerns by creating an independent
citizen's commission to draw district lines.

A unique panel of experts will discuss how the 2001 redistricting process
impacted Silicon Valley communities, as well as the options for redistricting
reform (http://www.commoncause.org/site/pp.asp?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&b=1416067) now
that SCA 3 is dead. There will also be ample opportunity for public
discussion.

Featured Speakers:
Joe Simitian, State Senator (D-Palo Alto) (http://www.sen.ca.gov/simitian)
Fred Keeley, Co-Chair Voices of Reform, Commonwealth Club (
