not going perm

So, I think I discovered today that I won't be hired permanent at So_ny.  (They
did, however, extend my contract to the end of March.  (It won't be May as I
had first thought.))

I'd like to know what you think I should do.  I've been receiving queries from
a few headhunters because of my resume posted on the web and in various places.
 Should I tell my peers at So_ny that I'm looking for work and ask them to be a
reference?  How hard should I try to keep my looking for another job a secret?
