I'm not running a wireless network any more because (1) I was trying to
cut down on the amount typing I do on my laptop due to my hands and (2)
didn't want to deal with the security issues.

That's surprising that they're so expensive. I guess a lot of people must
be having this particular problem.
I did notice that the label on the unit says that it works with 802.11g.
Because 802.11g is higher speed, that may explain the higher cost.
Anyway, I hope it works. I didn't hear any rattling, so that's a good
sign :-).
