The masks on my outer firewall, inner firewall, Windows machine, and Linux
machines are all 255.255.255.0.  I don't think this is the problem.

I haven't tried.  Could you suggest a server?

That's possible.  Perhaps it's just the hot weather :-).  Seriously, I use
Linksys and have had problems with it in the past.  Maybe it's finally
starting to die and perhaps needs to be replaced.

In any case, as a workaround, I modified my local caching DNS server so it
times out negative replies faster and it seems to be behaving better.
