Thank you for using National Abortion Federation Mail System Message sent to the following recipients: Senator Feinstein Senator Boxer Message text follows: Robert where I live March 10, 2004 [recipient address was inserted here] [recipient name was inserted here], As a constituent, I am writing to ask you to oppose S. 146, the ?Unborn Victims of Violence Act? when it comes to the Senate floor. This legislation poses a direct threat to Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion The Unborn Victims of Violence Act sets a dangerous precedent by establishing that an "unborn child" is a person separate from a woman, and elevating its status above that of a woman. The bill makes no distinction between a nine-month old fetus and a two-hour old zygote. By granting full personhood to a fetus, embryo or zygote, the Unborn Victims of Violence Act threatens to set the stage for a complete prohibition of abortion. The Unborn Victims of Violence Act does nothing to combat violence against women--which is why the National Network to End Domestic Violence opposes the bill. If the supporters of the bill were truly concerned with protecting pregnant women from violence, they would focus their time and energy of legislation that would actually do so--like full funding for the Violence Against Women Act. Though the bill's sponsors allege they have written a bill that protects women, when pressed they freely admit that the Unborn Victims of Violence Act is a political ploy. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), told CNN, "They say it undermines abortion rights. It does. But that's irrelevant." Lawmakers shouldn't be pushing their anti-choice agenda under the guise of protecting women from violence. I encourage you to support efforts that would genuinely protect women from violence without undermining Roe v. Wade. Please oppose this deceptive, anti-choice bill when it comes to the Senate for a vote. Sincerely, Robert
