I strongly urge you to vote against the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, S.
1019, and instead support legislation for effective prosecution of
violence against women that does not undermine the legal foundation of
women's reproductive rights.
Establishing a status of "person" for fertilized eggs or fetuses in
federal law would set a dangerous legal precedent with broad implications
for women's lives and health.
Nearly one in three women report being physically assaulted during
pregnancy, but H.R. 1997/S. 1019 would do little to enhance their
protection. Better ways to address this pervasive problem include
increasing funding for programs under the Violence Against Women Act,
improving access to health insurance for pregnant women and increasing
family planning funding to provide more prenatal care services.
Please support any substitute that would properly place the focus on
violence against the pregnant woman and would exclude legal personhood for
a fetus.
Sincerely,
Robert
