Road One Bike Safety
Courses "You already know how to ride a bike.
Now learn how to drive one." Back by popular
demand, EBBC's "Street Skills for Cyclists" course is based on
the League of American Bicyclists Road One class.
This FREE class, to be held in Oakland in March
and April 2004, will concentrate on the thorny issues of a
bicyclist sharing the road with motorists. Riding a bike in
traffic ain't easy. Negotiating left turns, avoiding buses,
getting through intersections, and sharing the road with
hurried motorists can be a real challenge. "Street Skills for
Cyclists" will provide proven strategies that will help both
novice and experienced cyclists stay safer and feel more
confident cruising them mean streets.
Choose from one
of three lecture dates, followed by an optional on-road
session. Lectures will be held at Oakland's Rockridge Branch Library, 5366 College
Ave. (at Manila, 5-blocks from BART). A bicycle is not
required at the lecture. Lectures (snacks provided) are
offered on:
- Sat., March 6, 10am-2pm
- Wed., March 10, 6-10pm
- Thur., April 1, 6-10pm
The On-Road Bicycle Riding
Session will be held Sat., April 3, 9am-4pm:
- Expect to ride about six miles in Downtown Oakland.
Course maps and directions from a convenient BART Station
will be provided. A light lunch will be provided.
- A helmet and operable bike are required at the Saturday
on-bike session.
Pre-registration
Required Call (510) 433-RIDE (7433); Select Option 2.

registrants will be expected to sign a liability waiver.
Funding for this project is made possible through a
grant from the Ca Office of Traffic Safety through the

Safe Bike
Parking and Valet Bike Parking
The lack of
secure bike parking keeps bicyclists from using their bikes as
much as they might like. Safe Routes to Transit is one way the EBBC is
working to address this issue. Working with the Bicycle-Friendly
Coalition (BFBC), the EBBC was instrumental in
establishing the bike parking facility at the downtown
BART Station, and is monitoring the City of Oakland
as the Fruitvale BART gets a bike parking
makeover.
EBBC and BFBC volunteers provide valet bike
parking during public events.
