The power blackout is the hard part.  There's the APM (automated power
management?) which is supposed to be able to handle that, but I know very
little about it.

I have done the firewall/proxy server thing, so I can help you with that.

Is POE that WinPOET thing?  I know nothing about it.  I removed it right
after I got my DSL router.

Perhaps.  I don't use DHCP since it can potentially be insecure and I
don't really need it since I have complete control over all my machines
here.

Gateway and subnet mask.  If you use DHCP, you'll get the IP and DNS.  If
not, you do need to assign an IP and DNS addresses.

Also, make sure your DHCP server is liberal.  My work only allows certain
MAC (ethernet frame) addresses; so, you cannot just plug in any old
computer onto the network and be assured of a connect.

That's cool.  Someone usually brings a can air horn, but that's it.  I
would love to have a truck/car horn.  (Those rubber horn things just
completely die in the winter around here.)
