A FREE RANGE CHILDHOOD: Self Regulation at Summerhill School by Matthew Appleton Matthew Appleton, author of A FREE RANGE CHILDHOOD, will speak at the Lucy Parsons Center in Boston on Wednesday, April 11. Matthew Appleton describes his adventures in the little country school that defeated the British government=EDs Education Establishment. A Free Range Childhood is the first in-depth account of the world-famous Summerhill School since school founder A.S. Neill=EDs classic book, Summerhill: A Radical Approach to Child Rearing, became a national bestseller in the 1960s. Appleton was a houseparent (residential advisor) at Summerhill for nine years. His book provides a detailed, lively description of daily life at Summerhill and reflects thoughtfully on the unusual educational philosophy guiding this visionary experiment in education. Summerhill is a radically innovative boarding school in Leiston, England, founded in 1921 by A.S. Neill, a Scottish schoolmaster who rebelled against the harsh discipline imposed on generations of students in traditional British schools. At Summerhill, children are not required to attend classes. They are not graded, and they are not punished for violating adults=ED arbitrary demands for order and discipline. Community rules and decisions are determined democratically in all-school meetings, with every child having a voice and a vote. Relationships among people, young and old, are open, honest, and direct. A Summerhill Society was formed to promote this new educational vision in the U.S., and by the end of the 1960s literally hundreds of "free schools" had been founded across the country, many directly inspired by Summerhill. Matthew Appleton will be touring the northeastern U.S. to promote his new book. He will give a talk and sign copies on Wednesday evening, April 11, at 7:00 pm, at: The Lucy Parsons Center (Boston's Independent Radical Bookstore) 549 Columbus Ave. Boston, MA 02118 (617) 267-6272 Symphony stop on Green Line Mass Ave stop on Orange Line 1=87 blocks east of Mass Ave on Columbus Ave =--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--= You can review old listings by going to http://igc.topica.com/lists/act-ma Remember the Peace & Justice Hotline 617 787-6809 For more info and posting guidelines see http://web.mit.edu/cwelch/lacasa/calendar.html ----------------------------------------------------- Topica requires that you be a member of the list to post to it and that your email address in your message match exactly the email address on record at the Topica site. =--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--= ==^================================================================ EASY UNSUBSCRIBE click here: http://igc.topica.com/u/?aVxies.aVxkrS Or send an email To: http://www.igc.topica.com/~act-ma-unsubscribe This email was sent to: http://dummy.us.eu.org/robert T O P I C A -- Learn More.
