Right.  I saw the rest of your message only after I sent my message to
you!  In any case, I don't exactly understand how to compile a kernel
under Debian correctly -- it seems like there's no guidance as to how to
get the configuration of the kernel image that comes with the Debian 2.2
(e.g., 2.2.18pre21).  I'm just winging it for now.
