review: Duckworth Lane, Newton, MA

Duckworth Lane Wine Bar & Bistro
Walnut St. near turnpike overpass
Newton (Newtonville)

Surprisingly, there are actually vegan dishes at this restaurant: a tapas
appetizer and an entree. The tapa is grilled portabello and it was
delicious. It was more like a salad and seemed to have a vinagrette on
it. I assume that the lettuce was from Ca, but it was still fresh
tasting. The entree was called "Veggie Curry". It was pretty good --
definitely not an Indian-style curry. There was eggplant, which was
grilled and had many spices (one of which tasted like cinnamon to me,
which was interesting), and mashed (sort of like babaganoush). There was
spinach which had some red pepper in it and was also spiced. There was
cauliflower which clearly had mustard seeds in it and was half-mashed
(which is fairly odd). It was served with a pilaf which had pinto and
garbanzo beans in it and had a very nice flavor. Also included was a
chutney which was quite sweet (don't know if it was home-made or not) and
cantilope and orange slices.

There seemed to be many other vegetable dishes and I bet that they could be
made vegetarian and probably even vegan if you asked.

It's pretty far from most public transit (except maybe one of the Newton
express buses) and was somewhat pricey ('though much less than Five
Seasons), so it would probably be inapproriate for a dining out.
