No, finally I decided to partition the hard disk. There is a way to do it
without having to reinstall the windows system. I just had to defragment
it.
That was a better solution to me. Besides umsdos seemed to be quite old
and abandoned...
To be quite sure that I would do any harm to the NT system (which was at
the time used by another person), I didn't touch at the boot configuration
and used a diskette to boot linux (you just loose 3 or 4 seconds...).
Write me if you want to do the same and need more information.
