non-anonymous ftp site through userfs 0.9?

I'm interested in running ftp as if it were NFS, in a way similar to the Alex
File System.  I need to have read _and_ write access to this file system.
I see that the ftpfs that comes with userfs 0.9 only has read access.  Has
anyone tried to make ftpfs allow both reads and writes?  Would I be better
off just trying to get Alex going instead?
