I'm sorry to report that I found no way around this.  I happen to have had an
old computer sitting around with Windows on it and got things to work that
way.

Once I got past the activation, I threw away (well, stored away :) the
hard-drive with Windows on it, installed Linux instead, and plugged in a
Linksys router with my Linux machines behind it.  Works great now.

If you can possibly avoid Verizon, I would go with SpeakEasy instead.  (SE has
a 1-year commitment, which I couldn't make, which is why I stick with sucky
Verizon.)
